Poder sin Autoridad / Power without Authority

Poder sin Autoridad / Power without Authority

Valeria no dirigía; imponía.

In the office, the air smelled of stale coffee and tension disguised as productivity. For Clara, each day was a silent battle fought within the four gray walls of her cubicle. Her boss, Valeria, reigned from the corner with the window, a glass throne from which she issued orders like bullets scented with an expensive floral perfume that reminded Clara of funerals.

Valeria didn’t manage; she imposed. Every suggestion was a decree, every other idea an error to be corrected. «Clarita, darling,» she’d say with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes, «that report has the wrong cover color. The corporate blue is my blue, the one from the brand guidelines I designed.» And so, from the tone of emails to the exact time for coffee breaks, everything was under the microscope of her ego.

The worst part wasn’t the arbitrary orders, but the toxicity wrapped in empowering rhetoric. Valeria held «brainstorming» meetings where only her ideas were valid. She criticized in public, flattered in private only to later use those confidences against her. She was a master of gaslighting: «I never said that, Clara. Your memory is playing tricks on you. Are you sure you can handle this position?»

Clara channeled her anger into small acts of rebellion: she used a red Post-it note amidst a sea of yellow ones, arrived at 9:01 instead of 9:00 sharp, and on her desk, hidden behind her monitor, she kept a notebook where she drew grotesque caricatures of Valeria with a dragon’s head breathing fire over mountains of papers.

The breaking point came on a rainy Tuesday. Valeria, in a fit of «inspiration,» decided to redo an entire project hours before the deadline, a project weeks in the making. «The client needs something more visionary, something only I can visualize,» she declared, dismissing the team’s efforts without batting an eye.

Clara, her white knuckles gripping her mug, felt the familiar urge: she wanted to scream. She wanted to raise her voice and tell that woman how narcissistic, how domineering, how toxic she was. But she didn’t. Instead, that night, she opened a new document on her laptop. It wasn’t cartoons this time. It was the first chapter of a novel. The protagonist was a corporate tyrant so infamous that she ended up losing everything, even her precious perfume, when she was exposed by a silent employee who kept a secret diary.

Clara typed until her fingers ached. With each word, the weight in her chest eased a little. Valeria would still have her window the next day, her ego intact, her reign of micromanagement. But Clara had discovered something: in her fictional world, justice was possible, and silence was no longer a prison, but the sharpest weapon she possessed.

As she closed her laptop, she watched the rain slide down the window and smiled, for the first time in weeks, without bitterness. The scream, at last, had found its form.

El idealista que alguna vez fui. / The idealist I once was.

El idealista que alguna vez fui. / The idealist I once was.

There was a time when I believed life was summed up in a stable job, eternal love, a warm home, and a car that would take us on family adventures. I dreamed of that Hollywood movie that promised happy endings effortlessly.

But reality has its own scripts, and mine turned out to be written in invisible ink. Fifteen years later, I’m still jumping from job to job, as if the ground beneath my feet would never solidify. My marriage, once a refuge, has become a mirage: the woman with whom I shared promises is now someone I barely recognize.

And then there’s my son, a tiny being of light and shadow, diagnosed with type 2 autism. Sometimes I feel like I’m living with a miniature alien: I love him madly, but I can’t always understand him. The economy took over our home, and today we’re nomads dependent on our parents, while the family car has become a taxi with no fixed destination.

My family is a puzzle of broken pieces: a half-brother lost in a game with a toxic girlfriend, parents who looked the other way when the bomb exploded, dysfunctional in-laws—one a fugitive from the law, the other trapped in her own limited world.

I am the man who carries the pieces. Sometimes alone, sometimes together, but always burdened by the weight of what could have been but never was.

I realized too late that I was an idealist: I hoped that a supernatural being, a miracle, would suddenly open a portal and take me to that perfect world I dreamed of. But miracles are rare, and religion—as Nietzsche said—is sometimes nothing more than the opium that lulls people to sleep.

Today I know that the only magic that exists is determination, discipline, and perseverance… but always anchored in reality. Knowing the world you live in, accepting its rules, and flowing with it—not against it. Playing the hero only brings pain.

If anyone reads this, let them know: don’t expect magic portals. Build with what you have, love with who you are, and move forward without empty hopes. Life isn’t a movie… but it can still have glimpses of beauty amidst the chaos.

El hombre en el escritorio. / The man at the desk.

El hombre en el escritorio. / The man at the desk.

Salí a caminar, corrí, volé.

I am the man at the desk, a code that does its job. My lethargic eyes blink increasingly slowly, while my pale face is struck by the intense light, burning my pupils, of this screen on which I write my reports. Day and night, without rest, small jobs. I have lost track of time, without knowing the day, without knowing the time. The mouse is just another extension of my hand, and my ears have been forced to become deaf so I don’t have to listen to my surroundings. I don’t want to be disturbed by anything that doesn’t have to do with this monotonous routine of sitting through this ordeal, seeing my face in meetings, reading about the problems that cause other problems in this company where people only come to me for their reasons. issues. Here I am, looking at an empty Excel table, trying to fill it, draining my dreams, losing my feelings, slow and quiet, tired and awake. Staring at nothing, but absorbed in the inconvenience that this routine causes me. I am just another number in this corporate program where I receive little for how much I do, and I do a lot for how little I receive. At what moment did I fall into this abyss from which I cannot get out? When was the last time I stopped here? I went for a walk, I ran, I flew. I laughed with my friends, if I had any. When did I forget that I am trapped in an algorithm, a pact with the devil, a tool where they drain your life and you receive money in return? Money that goes to pay expenses, money stolen by other companies. Martyr complex, hero belief. Who am I to feel different? Just another number in the eyes of a millionaire. One more cog in this machine called global entrepreneurship. What’s special about me? What do I do? I’m the man at the desk, watching people believe they’re something other than abused beings.

Si fuera Piscis. / If I were Pisces.

Si fuera Piscis. / If I were Pisces.

Mi creatividad no tendría límites.

If I were like you, what would it be like? I’m sure it won’t be easy. Being swimming daily in a sea of feelings and emotions that govern my mind but not my actions. Acting as expected but not always as I would like. With more than a million questions in my head but no answers. An engine that does not stop like energy that never disappears. With anxiety when you are not there, with worry when I have you. Believing that everything is personal to me and perhaps without being, I am the center of the universe. Living with the uncertainty of having you, the loneliness of not seeing you and the raw emotions of finding you. Constantly changing my reactions, tastes, desires and colors. Talking tirelessly about the thousand things I want but never telling you how, when or why. Dissolving what you took for granted, creating new theorems, establishing laws that I will not follow, rules that I will break and telling you, simply, «Sorry, I forgot it.»

If I were like you, it would be beautiful. Appearing like I’m dancing with the stars but, in truth, worried and with my feet firmly on the ground. With nobility, humility and sympathy, I would give my hug to whoever needs it, I would cry with whoever I wanted and I would always help those who did not ask me. I would invent the most absurd things in the world to make you laugh and I would show you that you also have to spend, you have to live! My creativity would have no limits. One day I would be a spy, another day a publicist, inventor, actress, screenwriter or artist. We would live our own soap opera of Korean or Mexican proportions. It would make your existence like an electrocardiogram. I would be faithful to you to the core, I would love you secretly. In my introversion I would think of you; and, in my tantrums I would defend your rights.

If I were like you and you were like me. I don’t know if you would have chosen me as your lover. Because even if you think I don’t see it. I notice all those details of your personality that make me reflect on how amazing you are and how amazing you can be. While I only live in a world of squares, numbers, laws and vertices. You, for me, break all the schemes, you go out of the box, you break paradigms, you live every day, teaching me that life has as many possibilities as the number of stars that exist in the sky.

Love yourself more!

En ese campo de Margaritas. / In that field of Daisies.

En ese campo de Margaritas. / In that field of Daisies.

What is this that I am observing? I find myself seeing with difficulty a bright and warm sun over this green wasteland, surrounded by hills and an infinite sky, without knowing what is reality and what is fiction. The sensitivity of my hands can feel the grass and my love for nature allows me to appreciate every detail of this new world that surrounds me.

I only remember that one summer night, I went to sleep with my heart full of desire and nostalgia. Closing my eyes, my mind began to feel like I was drifting into a deep sleep. In that moment, I appeared in this field, where the sunlight seems to bathe each flower with a golden glow, the wind caresses the flowers and a melodious and soft harmony is created.

In the middle of that green sea, I saw my beloved. She walked slowly, letting her fingers brush the delicate flowers as she moved forward. She was wearing a white dress that fluttered in the wind, and her hair cascaded down her shoulders, reflecting the sun’s sparkles.

With my heart racing, I started running towards her. As she approached me, I could see the smile on her beautiful face and the joy in her beautiful eyes. The love I felt for her illuminated every corner of her being, making me feel like I was floating on a cloud of happiness.

When we were finally face to face, I took her hands and, together, we walked through this field full of flowers. Time seemed to have stopped, and all that mattered in that moment was us and the love we shared.

With every step she took, the daisies bowed to pay tribute to her beauty. The field reflected the purity of her feelings, and each flower seemed to whisper words of hope and promises of love to an uncertain future.

Unfortunately, the road came to an end and I woke up in my cold bed, crying nostalgically, with the memory of that daisy field still fresh in my mind. It had just been a torturous dream, which I couldn’t help. How I wish I could experience that magical moment again, even if it were on another plane, the plane of dreams. And so, kiss your lips and fill my sense of hope in my heart.

I got out of bed and started a new day of hard work, carrying with me the memory of having seen you in my dream and the promise of looking for you and loving you again.
