No me encontrarás.
My dear, someday you will read this:
I am writing to you from the shore of an island that doesn’t appear on any map. Here, time has a different texture, denser, like honey that never quite finishes pouring. The hours are long and stretch like shadows at sunset, but without the promise of dawn.
Around me, the landscape is immense but not beautiful. The sea, with its endless tongue, whispers secrets I can’t decipher. The sky is a canopy so vast that sometimes it hurts to look at it, because there isn’t a single cloud with which to observe its shape. At night, the stars are silent witnesses to a conversation that always ends in a monologue.
Sometimes, the wind beats hard against my window. It’s not a furious wind, but a wind that seeks company, that howls through the corners of the house hoping to find someone else. But it only finds me, and its lament becomes my own.
On this island, the table is always set for one. The bread tastes like ash, and the coffee always gets cold before I can savor it, because there’s no rush to share the first cup. I’ve learned to dance with my own shadow, but its echo on the empty walls is a constant reminder that the dance should be for two.
Sometimes I turn on all the lights in the house, but it’s not the darkness I fear. It’s the way the light doesn’t reflect another gaze, the way objects remain static, in their place, because there’s no one to disturb them, to fill them with life. They are just things. And I, just an inhabitant.
It’s not sadness I feel, not exactly. It’s like being the last tree in a felled forest. You still stand, you bear fruit, you offer shade, but there’s no longer an ecosystem. You are a miniature universe orbiting in absolute stillness.
If you ever find these words, don’t look for me. You won’t find me. I only hope that, as you read this, you know that somewhere, someone fully understands what it feels like to be a lighthouse that no longer guides any ship.
Hoping the wind will carry these words away,
Alone.
